How Long Does a Spray Tan Last? (And How to Make It Last Longer)

It’s the question we hear most: how long will my spray tan actually last? The honest answer is that it depends as much on your aftercare as on the tan itself. With the right routine, most of our clients keep a beautiful, even glow for 7 to 10 days.

What to expect day by day

  • Regular (8–12 hour) tans develop overnight. Rinse the next morning and your color keeps deepening for the first 24 hours.
  • Express (3–5 hour) tans are perfect when you’re short on time — you rinse the same day and the color continues to set afterward.

Either way, the cosmetic bronzer you see right after your appointment is just a guide color. Your real, custom-matched tan is developing underneath.

Why tans fade early

Spray tans fade as your skin naturally exfoliates. Anything that speeds up exfoliation shortens your glow:

  • Long, hot showers and steam
  • Bar soaps (especially Dove) and exfoliating scrubs or loofahs
  • Chlorine pools, hot tubs, and heavy sweating
  • Dry skin — dehydrated skin sheds faster

How to make it last

  1. Wait to rinse. Follow your artist’s timing — overnight for regular, 3–5 hours for express.
  2. Moisturize twice a day with a gentle, unscented lotion. Hydration is the single biggest factor in an even fade.
  3. Use lukewarm water and pat dry instead of rubbing.
  4. Skip exfoliating products and oils while your tan is on.
  5. Book a maintenance schedule. Locals who never lose their glow grab our 4-pack — see pricing and packages.
